Savate, also known as French boxing, is a martial art that stands out for its elegance and technical precision. Unlike other combat disciplines, savate incorporates the use of both feet and fists, while requiring practitioners to wear shoes. This unique aspect gives it an airy and dynamic style, demanding both precision and speed.
Technique and Specifics
Savate is a foot-and-fist combat sport in which every strike must be delivered with surgical precision. Practitioners use specialized footwear to strike, adding a distinctive dimension to their training.
Kicks include a variety of techniques such as chassés (push kicks), fouettés (snap kicks), and revers (hooking or sweeping kicks).
Each movement must be executed with control and strategy, making this sport as intellectual as it is physical. Savate training includes a thorough warm-up, targeted strength training exercises, and sparring sessions to apply the techniques learned.

Interview with Rebecca Mayol
Rebecca Mayol, coach at Ælite Club and savate champion, shares her journey:
“I’ve been boxing for 19 years and discovered savate at university. My background in dance helped me progress quickly thanks to my flexibility and sense of rhythm.”
Rebecca has won numerous titles in competition, showcasing her exceptional mastery of savate.
She emphasizes the importance of technique and precision in this sport, noting that “French boxing is very instructional and suitable for everyone, both men and women.”
When asked what a typical savate session looks like at Ælite Club, she explains:
“We start with a 10 to 15-minute warm-up to prepare all the muscles and joints. Then, we move on to foot and fist techniques, followed by strength training exercises specific to boxing. Finally, we finish with sparring to put the techniques into practice.”
A Gender-Balanced Practice
Rebecca also points out that savate attracts a balanced mix of men and women, unlike other forms of boxing:
“In savate, about 60% are men and 40% are women, compared to 80–85% men in English boxing.”
This mix enriches the sessions and allows everyone to progress at their own pace.
Savate is a demanding and refined discipline that combines strength, technique, and strategy.
Thanks to passionate coaches like Rebecca Mayol, the sport continues to attract new enthusiasts, drawn by its unique approach and respect for traditional combat values.
For those looking to discover a new form of boxing, savate offers a challenge that is both physical and mental, suitable for all levels and genders.
